Celebrating Black History Month: A Month of Learning and Inspiration
As February approaches, the CDSBEO is gearing up to celebrate Black History Month! Throughout the month, our classrooms and schools will be filled with engaging learning activities and educational programs. We’re excited to share stories about incredible Black Canadian heroes and authors who have left an indelible mark on Canadian history.
While we value and celebrate diversity year-round, Black History Month provides a special opportunity to highlight the ongoing contributions of Black individuals in Canada.
Diving into Black Literature
Throughout this month we will focus on Black authors and literature! With permission from the author, primary classes have been invited to share their thoughts and questions in a letter. The exercise is a wonderful opportunity for our young learners to make connections to the stories and enhance their understanding of diverse communities.
Special Guest Anthony McLean
On February 12th, we are honoured to welcome Anthony McLean virtually to our schools as part of our Black History Month celebrations! As a “master storyteller,” Anthony will share insights on mental health, diversity & inclusion with students in grades 4 through 12 in two separate sessions. Students will participate in an inspiring learning experience that fosters empathy, acceptance, and well-being.

Celebrating Black Canadian Heroes
Throughout the month, we will be celebrating Black Canadian heroes like Anne Cools, the first Black senator in Canada, and Willie O’Ree, the first Black player in the NHL. From Viola Desmond to Donovan Bailey, students will be learning about and celebrating the remarkable contributions of many Black Canadians!
Black History Month Art Contest
Calling all talented artists! Join our Black History Month Art Contest and showcase your creativity. Create a piece of art, digital or visual, that embodies the importance of Black History Month, Anti-Racism, or our empowering theme – I Belong Here.
Submission deadline is February 23rd, 2024. Top entries will be proudly displayed at our central board office in Kemptville during the week of March 4th. Don’t miss the chance to have your work celebrated! Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of an inspiring celebration! Students can speak to their teacher to submit artwork.
